Abstract
Türkiye and Lebanon have employed various strategies in response to the Syrian refugee influx. There is a notion that the access to humanitarian assistance in these host countries plays a crucial role in preventing Syrian refugees from going back to their home country, a durable solution adopted by the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) to forced displacement crises. This study examines the impact of humanitarian assistance on the voluntary repatriation decisions of Syrian refugees in Türkiye and Lebanon. A comprehensive literature review was conducted, along with 427 surveys with Syrian refugees in Türkiye and Lebanon. The results suggest that while humanitarian aid plays a critical role in supporting Syrian refugees in Türkiye and Lebanon, it is not the leading factor in their decision to return to Syria. This study contributes to better understanding of the main drivers and impeding factors behind Syrian refugees’ voluntary repatriation decisions.
